Meta is reportedly set to follow the recent trend of launching smart glasses without a camera. This is how Even Realities made a name for themselves, and now RayNeo and XGIMI are also launching smart glasses without a display. According to a new report from The Information, Meta is set to do the same thing.
The report states that Meta could unveil the new model called ‘Luna’ at its annual Connect developer conference which is scheduled for next week. Luna is reported to come in two styles, with one being called Clubmaster and the other being called Burbank.
No camera on-board these glasses, but they will have six built-in microphones and speakers that will point towards the user’s ears. Allowing the user to talk to Meta AI and also listen to podcasts and music, a feature that is actually very popular with Meta’s current smart glasses. There will also be a button on the side that users can press to quickly start talking to Meta AI.
Removing the camera will make these glasses much slimmer and lighter, which is a common complaint with Meta’s smart glasses. They often weight around 50g or more, and typical glasses usually are closer to 25-30g.
No word on a display being built-in
What would set these apart from the Even Realities G2, the RayNeo iO, and the XGIMI MemoMind One, is the fact that there’s no display built-in. These three glasses have no cameras, but do have a monochrome display built-in to show you different information. Like the time, your calendar, a teleprompter, translation and more.
In fact, it sounds like this new pair of glasses from Meta are going to be pretty minimal. Basically being a regular pair of glasses with microphones and speakers built-in. It’ll be very interesting to see how much Meta plans to charge for these.
