Huawei has recently unveiled a new smartphone powered by a new chipset: the Kirin 9050 Pro. We’ve seen Huawei release new chipsets in the past, but according to the company, this new Huawei chip is entirely free of US components.

So, why does it matter that the new Huawei chips is free from US components? This is because as part of being on the US Entity List, Huawei cannot do business with US companies and vice versa. This includes using technology that might have been patented by US companies. This is even if the components were made by a company in a different country.
Claiming that the Kirin 950 Pro is made without US components is a big step for the company. It’s also good news for the Chinese semiconductor industry.Â
For those unfamiliar ASML is a Dutch-based company. It is responsible for the advanced machinery used by companies like TSMC to make semiconductors. However, Huawei cannot get its hands on ASML’s equipment. As a result, they had to come up with alternative processes.
In Huawei’s case, it uses what it is calling the Tau Scaling Law which helps reduce signal delays. Another tech developed under the process is called LogicFolding. This is where it shortens signal paths to pack more transistors into a smaller space. In some ways, it’s similar to TSMC’s manufacturing process, where a chip made on the 2nm process can fit more transistors compared to one built on the 3nm process.
Impressive improvements
According to Huawei, its own research paper claims the new chipset ran cooler than the previous model. It packed 55% more transistors per square millimeter, and cut power consumption by as much as 66% on some tasks. However, it’s worth noting that this paper hasn’t been peer reviewed yet. This means we’ll have to take Huawei’s word for it, for now.
While it might be a while before we see Chinese-made semiconductors hit the mainstream, it is still good news for Chinese companies. It shows that it is possible to make somewhat advanced chipsets without relying on US-made technology or technology from US allies.
