Xiaomi recently announced the launch of its Android 17 Developer Preview program. With this move, the company is taking a step in terms of speed of adoption of new versions of the mobile OS. The Android 17 Developer Preview program currently covers four specific models: the Xiaomi 17 (Review), the Xiaomi 17 Ultra (Review), the Leica Leitz Phone powered by Xiaomi, and the Xiaomi 15T Pro (Review). It will allow app creators to ensure their software runs smoothly on the new platform long before the official public release.

It’s noteworthy that testers cannot simply download this first developer build over the air. Instead, the process requires a manual “flash” of a dedicated ROM. Of course, this will completely wipe all data from the device. So, Xiaomi strongly advises against installing the preview on a primary phone. The firmware targets professionals and tech enthusiasts who understand the risks of running unfinished software.
Users must check that their devices are running certain versions of HyperOS before they can begin the installation. For the Android 17 developer preview, each model needs a different build requirement. For instance, the Xiaomi 17 and the Ultra model require different HyperOS versions to bridge the gap to the new developer environment.
To help developers manage their testing environment, Xiaomi also provides rollback ROMs. These files allow users to return their devices to a stable, official version of the software whenever they want.
More compatible models and a public beta will arrive later
As the official release of Android 17 gets closer this year, we can expect Xiaomi to add more models to this program. Plus, they should also open a more stable beta phase for the general public. Let’s hope to get more news on it soon.
Xiaomi isn’t the first Android third-party partner to offer an Android 17 beta program. Motorola kicked off its Android 17 beta program back in February, much to the surprise of many. However, even before that, OnePlus and OPPO did the same on their flagship phones.
