Sony’s flagship smartphone is now getting the Android 17 update, the Xperia 1 VIII. This phone was announced back in May with Android 16, and now the latest version of Android is coming to the device.
Android 17 is now rolling out to the Sony Xperia 1 VIII
Users on Reddit started reporting that they’re receiving the stable Android 17 update. The update weighs 1.2GB, and it comes with version 73.1.A.2.61. It seems to be reaching users in Europe as we speak.
We’re not sure if the update is rolling out in any other regions, as users from Europe are reporting its arrival. If not, it will spread its availability to other regions in the coming days and weeks.
The official changelog that Sony attached mentions Android 17’s new Desktop mode. The update includes the ‘Wallpaper & style’ feature with wallpapers and new clock designs, which make the phone more customizable.
The Quick Settings panel has been redesigned
The Quick Settings panel on the Sony Xperia 1 VIII has been redesigned. It now lets you resize and arrange tiles however you want. You can pick whether you want to see short descriptions on larger tiles as well.
Sony also confirmed that screen recording has been improved, as it allows you to record the entire screen or just a specific app. It can also record device and microphone audio at the same time, if you want to comment on something as you’re recording it.

The AI Camera Assistant in Photo mode now lets you register up to three custom looks. You can easily switch between them and rename them. There are also a bunch of improvements and bug fixes packed into the update, of course.
This update is, as per usual, rolling out in stages. If you don’t receive it immediately, don’t fret. You’ll probably get it in the coming days, or perhaps weeks. It all depends on where you live and how lucky you are.
