The memory crisis has seen wider expansion from companies like CXMT in China filling gaps to produce RAM in the wake of the big three focusing most of their efforts on the demand from AI data centers, but companies like South Korea’s SK Hynix are showcasing why it remains one of the top contenders for memory across multiple device categories, as it’s now rumored to be close to starting mass production of LPDDR6 mobile RAM for smartphones.
Xiaomi is rumored to be the first company that will produce a flagship smartphone using this new RAM from Sk Hynix, though it isn’t mentioned what phone model Xiaomi will be using, nor has it been confirmed that it will be using LPDDR6 mobile RAM from the company at this point.
SK Hynix will start mass producing LPDDR6 mobile RAM in the second half of 2026
According to the report from Herald Corp., SK Hynix is planning to start mass producing its LPDDR6 mobile RAM in the second half of 2026. In doing so, smartphone manufacturers will start using this RAM in devices during production around the same time. The RAM is said to be built on a 6th Gen 10nm process, and that it will be faster and more efficient than LPDDR5X.
SK Hynix is one of the three largest memory manufacturers in the world, alongside Samsung and Micron. It’s also currently in the midst of a lawsuit with both companies over accusations that the three of them have been engaged in a price-fixing scheme to control the memory market, contributing significantly to the memory crisis that has led to higher prices on many different types of consumer electronics.
The memory crisis is not slowing down, with companies like SK Hynix projecting that it will stretch into 2030 and beyond. This is a sentiment that has been shared by various other companies, including Samsung, IDC, and more.
