The Xbox 360 era will see a revival on modern hardware as Microsoft reportedly plans to bring Xbox 360 games to the PC platform in addition to its Project Helix console when it launches. Microsoft already makes some Xbox 360 games available on PC via its Xbox Store, including Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Gears of War 3, Fable III, Dragon Age: Origins, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and several more.
The main difference with this new initiative appears to be a much broader library of available titles from that platform, with the rollout happening in sync with another part of Microsoft’s plan to digitize physical games as consoles move toward a disc-less future. Microsoft’s plans are less fleshed. Sony on the other hand, has publicly acknowledged it plans to get rid of PlayStation game discs in 2028, drawing backlash from many gaming communities.
Microsoft plans to start rolling out Xbox 360 games on PC sometime in 2027
According to The Verge, which was able to view an internal document sent to employees that described these plans, the rollout for the Xbox and Xbox 360 games coming to PC will start between 2027 and 2028. The report doesn’t mention any specific dates.
In addition to new Xbox 360 games coming to PC, developers will have control over certain aspects of the launch. For example, developers will be able to decide whether or not it should be added to Game Pass. It’s also reported that developers will be able to decide how much the game should cost. This rollout of digital games will go hand in hand with Microsoft’s other plans to allow gamers to digitize physical games. Through this method, gamers can get a digital license for a physical version of a game that they own.
Doing so reportedly requires someone to insert their game disc into a compatible Xbox console with a disc drive, at which point they get a digital license for that game. The license then has the ability to be used across Xbox devices, including PCs and handhelds. The report also mentions that the license swaps to a new person if the disc changes hands.
