It seems like everything is getting a price increase these days and that will reportedly include the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro chipset, which is said to be going up in price compared to the Dimensity 9500 models. The latter was priced about $180 to $200 per chip unit, and the 9600 Pro model is said to be more than that, though not considerably more in the grand scheme of things. The chip is said to be built on the 2nm N2P process, and
At the end of the day it’s not entirely clear if this has been confirmed. However, it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary given the times. Companies like Samsung and SK Hynix are charging more for components like RAM. Intel and AMD are charging more for CPUs and GPUs. Which in the end results in higher prices for hardware containing it. So, it probably was only a matter of time before MediaTek raised the prices as well. The thing is, consumers really won’t see the actual price increase of the chip. That doesn’t mean they won’t feel it in their wallets. Because the devices containing a MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro will probably cost more now. This increase just won’t be felt from the chip directly. Since customers aren’t buying the chips themselves.
The MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro price increase is said to be close to $216 per unit
The jump from $200 to $216 per unit isn’t really all that much if you think about it. At least not when you’re looking at components that make up a smart device. It is a lot if you’re talking about things like a meal or the cost of a movie ticket. In those terms, $16 is a huge increase. However you slice it, though, the price increase of MediaTek’s new chips are going to be an unfortunate. Because if this bump in the cost is true, then the devices they are housed in will almost certain go up as well.
According to the original report on these changes, Ctee, the increase is part of “structural recovery” due to the cost of manufacturing having gone up. Which is really saying that it’s the same as everywhere else. Making these components costs more, so companies are charging more.
