It’s not uncommon for users to trade in an older smartphone when a newer model is released. So if you were thinking of upgrading to the iPhone 18 Pro, you might want to consider trading in earlier, because according to a report from SellCell, old iPhones could lose value if you wait a little bit longer.
Old iPhones at risk to lose value
According to the rumors, Apple is expected to announce its new iPhone 18 Pro models on September 9. But if you wait too long to trade in your older iPhone for the newer model, you could risk losing as much as $129 in trade-in value.
SellCell did a survey and found that the majority of users, 40.9%, would only sell or trade-in their older iPhone once they complete transferring data from their old iPhone to the new model. Only 1.3% say they would sell their device before Apple makes the announcement. Another 1.3% say they will only sell or trade-in on the day of the announcement.
It makes sense for users to trade in after they get their new device and the data transfer is complete. Plus, not everyone has an extra phone lying around that can tide them over until the new one arrives, right?
But according to SellCell, they found that old iPhones tend to lose value between the announcement day and the release day, dropping by as much as $129. This means that if you’re hoping to get the most out of your phone’s resale value, you should act now.
But will history repeat itself?
While it’s hard to argue with SellCell’s data, here’s something you might want to consider. There are rumors that suggest Apple might increase the price of all its iPhones by as much as $100. This means that not only will Apple’s new iPhones cost more, but older models will also go up in price.
What this suggests is that in the past, you could lose some resale value if you waited too long. But with the prices going up, more customers are looking for a good deal and as long as your device is in good condition and priced reasonably, you might get some takers. So in this instance, the loss in resale value might not be as big as before.
Either way, you’re essentially making a gamble. If you’re not really looking to profit and just want some extra cash for a device that would have otherwise been left unused, does it really matter?
