Apple has launched updated versions of its Mac mini and Mac Studio with newer-generation chips and AI features. The Mac Mini gets the new M6 and M5 Pro chips, while the Mac Studio moves to the M5 Max and M5 Ultra. The physical appearance and overall design of the devices are kept unchanged. The upgrades target users seeking improved AI performance, professional workloads, and more capable desktop computing overall.
Apple launches Mac Mini with M6 and M5 Pro chips
The Mac Mini’s biggest change is the arrival of the M6 chipset. It is Apple’s first processor built on a 2-nanometer design. In terms of specifications, it offers a 12-core CPU with two super cores, four performance cores, and six efficiency cores, along with a 12-core GPU. Moreover, each GPU core features a neural accelerator. Apple claims the updated hardware can deliver up to four times faster AI processing and twice the gaming performance of the M4 Mac mini.
Alongside the M6 Mac mini, Apple has also unveiled an M5 Pro-powered Mac mini. This variant is made specifically for users who want performance. It can be configured with an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU, while supporting up to 64GB of RAM and 307GB/s of memory bandwidth. The M6 supports up to 32GB of RAM and 170GB/s bandwidth. The M5 Pro model also gets rear Thunderbolt 5 ports, compared with Thunderbolt 4 on the M6 version. Last but not least, Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5Gbps Ethernet are now standard on both models.
Mac Studio gets an upgrade featuring M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips
Just like the Mac mini, the refreshed Mac Studio also retains its original design language. The changes are restricted to its hardware configurations. It is now offered with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chips. To give you an idea, the M5 Ultra is essentially a combination of two M5 Max chips through Apple’s 4.4TB/s UltraFusion connection. It can reach 36 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores. Apple claims up to 25 percent faster single-threaded performance and up to 30 percent faster multithreaded performance. The system also gains faster PCIe Gen 6 SSD storage, two Thunderbolt 5 ports, and support for four Studio Display XDR monitors at 5K and 120Hz.
In terms of pricing, the M6 Mac mini starts at $899 and offers only 256GB of onboard storage. On the other hand, the M5 Pro Mac mini starts at $1,699. The Mac Studio is priced at $2,499 with M5 Max, while M5 Ultra configurations begin at $5,499. Both devices are priced at the higher end of the segment.
