A new bug has reportedly been discovered that causes a Pixel 6 Pro phone to randomly reboot due to the device thinking that it’s overheating. If that sounds like a particularly inconvenient bug to have, you wouldn’t really be far off the mark. That’s because the last thing you probably want is your device to restart out of nowhere, whether you’re currently using it or not. Though, admittedly, it would be much more annoying if it was happening while you were actively doing something on your phone at the time.
According to a new post on Reddit, one user has been experiencing a bug that stems from the thermal management unit. According to the user, who goes by the name of Oshadhaviduranga, their phone has been falsely flagged as overheating by the TMU, causing the phone to reboot at random times. Thisi doesn’t appear to be an issue with other devices in the Pixel lineup.
The Pixel 6 Pro overheating bug is happening despite the device not being warm to the touch
While it’s important that a device is able to trigger a reboot in the event an overheating issue, you want that to happen when there’s actually an overheating issue happening. Oshadhaviduranga notes that when this happened, their device wasn’t even warm to the touch.
For more context, the thermal management unit on the Google Pixel 6 Pro has a threshold of 116 degrees Celsius, which is about 240 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s certainly a high temperature. The kicker is that the Pixel 6 Pro in question wasn’t getting anywhere near that temperature.
Oshadhaviduranga states that their device temperature was recorded just after the false overheating trip and it was only about 56 – 57 degrees Celsius. A much lower temperature than what was being recorded by the system.
It’s also worth noting that this is all happening on the user’s device running on Android 16, which appears to be a key factor. Other Pixel 6 Pro users on the Android 16 software may experience this issue as well. If you’ve already experienced the issue, then you might want to file a report with Google Support to give further details.
