OpenAI is giving its built-in, AI-powered visual creation engine a major speed and usability boost. Five months after debuting version 2.0, the company officially launched ChatGPT Images 2.5 across ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex users on desktop, mobile, and the web.
The centerpiece of this release is a massive speed upgrade. OpenAI cut image generation latency by up to 50% compared to Images 2.0, allowing users to render concepts and iterate on visual ideas much faster than before. The new model also yields more natural lighting, richer textures, and better handling of transparent backgrounds and non-Latin script instructions.
Drawing references and guided templates
Instead of relying purely on written text descriptions, ChatGPT Images 2.5 introduces a built-in Sketch tool. Users can type @Sketch or choose the canvas option from the menu, then use a touchscreen, mouse or stylus to doodle a rough layout or composition, and submit the drawing and text instructions. The AI then uses the rough sketch as a visual reference point to generate a finished image.
For non-designers trying to create specific assets, OpenAI added guided Templates for popular formats like posters, merchandise, icons, logos, and product shots. Templates walk users through step-by-step questions regarding style (such as Clean Studio or Editorial) and lighting settings. Additionally, when sharing generated images, users can choose to include the source prompt so colleagues can adapt the concept.
Targeted editing and subject consistency
Fixing minor mistakes in an otherwise great picture used to mean starting over. Version 2.5 addresses this by preserving background details, facial features, and subject lighting across multiple edit turns, even in complex scenes with busy backgrounds.
A new dedicated Edit toolbar includes tools for Remove BG (exporting transparent PNGs), Resize (switching aspect ratios like 16:9, 3:4, and 4:3), Erase, Markup, and Comment. The Comment feature lets users tap a specific spot on an image, leave a note like “change this color to blue,” and instruct the AI to update only that specific area without altering the rest of the canvas. Every edit step saves as a separate file, allowing creators to roll back to earlier versions anytime.
Developer APIs and security guardrails
Beyond consumer apps, OpenAI released two developer-focused API models. There’s GPT-Image-2.5 Flare, tuned for rapid rendering in social content and visual search at two to four times the generation speed of previous models. Then you have GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst, built for high-precision commercial campaign artwork where brand consistency is critical. Partners like Adobe, Manus, and Runway are already testing the models, with Adobe integrating them into Firefly.
OpenAI built in multiple measures to maintain safety standards across its platform. The list includes guardrails, C2PA metadata, and invisible digital watermarking to ensure generated visuals remain easily verifiable.
