Today, Apple is set to “reinvent” the foldable, with the launch of the iPhone Duo. So, of course, Samsung decided to release a new video titled “Welcome to Foldables”.
The video touts the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, claiming the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the lightest foldable, then ends by showing the entire Galaxy Z8 lineup, including the Flip. It’s a pretty short ad, welcoming Apple to this part of the market.
Since announcing the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series back in July, Samsung has been having massive success with the Galaxy Z Fold 8. In fact, it’s selling faster than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 was, which was already their best-selling foldable. It really shows that the market was yearning for something lighter, thinner, and a different shape. That is what the Galaxy Z Fold 8 delivers.
Apple is joining the foldable race 7 years later
Apple typically joins things late; it took them a few years to bring 120Hz to the iPhone. The same goes for Always-On Display, but I don’t think anyone expected them to take this long to make a foldable iPhone. After all, the first foldables were being sold in 2019 by Samsung, Huawei, and others. Apple essentially let them all figure out how to fix some of the bigger issues, like durability, battery life, and the crease.
Now, Apple is joining the fray and forcing basically everyone to launch a wide foldable. Samsung and Xiaomi have launched theirs, with HONOR, OPPO, vivo, and others expected to follow along very soon.
The Apple iPhone Duo is expected to launch at $1,999, which makes it $100 more than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 at $1,899. The big question mark with Apple’s foldable is going to be the software. Apple hasn’t done a lot with multitasking on iOS so far, but they will need to for the iPhone Duo.
