iOS 27 rolled out in a stable capacity to all eligible devices earlier this week. Besides the new features and UI changes, it finally brings a major overhaul to Apple Intelligence. While many iPhones still have the same storage requirements as before for Apple Intelligence, some models now need nearly twice as much free storage. This could be a problem if your photo and video library already takes up a large chunk of your storage.
Apple Intelligence now has a 14GB storage requirement on some iPhones
Apple Intelligence didn’t have a great start that Apple hoped or would have liked when it debuted in 2024. But the latest AI features in iOS 27 have a better chance of becoming popular. For one, Siri AI is a huge upgrade over the old Siri. What’s interesting is that Apple has added these new AI features while keeping the same 8GB device storage requirements for most models.
However, it seems certain iPhones that support Apple’s most advanced on-device AI models now need nearly twice as much free storage. According to Apple’s new support document, you need up to 14GB of free storage on the newest iPhones to get all of iOS 27’s AI features.
Other iPhones need up to 8GB of storage
This requirement applies to the new iPhone 18 Pro/ Max, iPhone Duo, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone Air. The reason these need more storage is that they offer two advanced AI features that aren’t available on other models. One is the Siri AI voice customization for expressiveness and pace. The other is improved accuracy for dictation.
These features apparently use Apple’s more powerful on-device AI model, which takes up more storage on your iPhone. As for the rest of the iPhone models, you need up to 8GB of storage for AI features.
