YouTube has a bunch of playback controls that lets you speed up or slow a video down. But now, an Android Authority report has revealed that YouTube Premium is testing new features that will help you watch videos faster.
YouTube Premium is testing faster videos
According to the report, YouTube is running a couple of experiments for YouTube Premium that will help you watch videos faster. One of those features is called “Auto Speed” and as the name and description suggests, this feature, when enabled, will speed through sections of a video automatically.
But why would you want to do that? If you’re short on time and want to get to the gist of the video, then this is where the feature comes in handy. Maybe you’re watching a cooking video and you don’t need a lengthy intro or background of the dish’s history. You just want the instructions. Presumably, Auto Speed will help you scrub through the chattier bits before getting to the main stuff. YouTube claims that the video will still remain comprehensible. So, while the video is being sped up, it won’t be to the point where you will miss out on everything.
The second feature is called “On-the-go.” This is useful for those who treat YouTube as a podcast app. Maybe you like watching talk shows or interviews and you don’t want to keep looking down at the screen. With “On-the-go,” YouTube will change the controls to a more simplified version that’s not as distracting.
Experiments for now
That being said, we should note that these features are only for YouTube Premium subscribers. Also, it’s worth mentioning that they are currently running as experiments. This means that there’s a chance YouTube might not go through with the launch at the end of the day.
As Android Authority points out, these features were spotted last month. However, they appear to be rolling out to more users since. You can check it out if the features are available to you, but they’ll only be available until April 27. We haven’t tried it for ourselves yet, but they sound interesting and hopefully YouTube will keep them around.
