Playing PS5 games on an Xbox console isn’t something you would think possible but one enterprising developer has made it possible, although there is a little bit of a trick to the whole thing as it wasn’t just booting up a PS5 game nor did it involve slipping a PS5 disc into the disc drive. Instead, it involves running a piece of software called PS5X, which is a PS5 emulator that allows you to play PS5 games.
However, there is a catch, and that catch is that the emulator is incredibly limited in what it can actually play, and the Xbox console running it, in this case an Xbox Series X which appears to be required, also has to be running in developer mode to get the PS5X emulator to actually work.
The PS5X emulator for Xbox Series X doesn’t play any games that are exclusively for PS5
The other limiting factor for this software is that it isn’t capable of running any games that are exclusive to PS5, such as the recently released Marvel’s Wolverine or the new Ghost of Yotei expansion. Rather, the only games that developer Devran Cosmo Uenal has gotten to run on it are PS5 versions of games that also exist on other platforms.
This includes Marvel Cosmic Invasion, Quake II, The Gex Trilogy, and Hellboy: Web of Wyrd. There’s yet another factor that can limit what games would even be compatible with this software beyond the four mentioned that Uenal has been able to get up and running. Xbox’s developer mode reportedly limits games to 5GB of the console’s memory. Any games that require more memory than that to run would not be able to boot, and that’s going to lock out a bunch of different games from working. According to Uenal, the software is strictly a “research project” that he’s been working on to test out PS5 homebrew and running game backups.
