Apple has now officially announced WatchOS 27, and if you’re using an Apple Watch then you probably want to know if yours is compatible with the new software. WatchOS 27 doesn’t appear to be a massive upgrade on the face of things and that’s mostly because it’s not. That doesn’t mean there aren’t a lot of changes or improvements though.
WatchOS 27 is more about a lot of the little incremental changes. The smaller niceties that refine the overall experience for users. Like a new single-tap gesture to open widgets from the Smart Stack. Allowing you to see quick, bite-sized pieces of relevant information quickly and easily. Or the ability to now use Workout Buddy on the watch without having to have your phone nearby. All of that being said, here are the Apple Watch models that will be compatible with WatchOS 27 when it launches later this year:
- Apple Watch SE 3
- Apple Watch Series 10
- Apple Watch Series 11
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch Ultra 3
That’s not a lot of different Apple Watch models. Especially when you compare that to how many iPhone models will be compatible with iOS 27 coming around the same time. It’s worth noting that there are a few different iPhone models every year. The Apple Watch isn’t getting that many models each year. So this is part of it. Having said that, Apple is currently at the 17th generation of iPhones with the iPhone 18 series coming soon, suspected to launch later this year. And iOS 27 is going to be available for several generations back. Unfortunately, that won’t be the case with the watches.
Most or all of the compatible models should work the same
Based on what’s being added, users should get the same experience across all models. Meaning, there likely won’t be any features or functions that are exclusive to one model or another. At least not right away. Apple could always patch in a feature that’s unique to something like the Apple Watch Ultra 3. Apple confirms that WatchOS 27 is coming this Fall, with a developer beta starting right away, and a public user beta beginning in July.
