A new tri-fold smartphone will launch on September 7, as competition to the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold. The device in question is the Huawei Mate XT 2, the company’s third tri-fold handset.

Alongside the Huawei Mate XT 2, the company will also announce HarmonyOS 7. Do note that we’re talking about a China launch here, not a global launch. The Huawei Mate XT 2 will likely get a global variant, though, judging by past releases.
The press event will kick off at 2:30 PM local time, which translates to 8:30 AM CET, 7:30 AM BST, 2:30 AM EST, 11:30 PM PST (September 6). The press event will be streamed, but via Weibo, most probably. At that time, or soon after it, we’ll get all the relevant information, though.
What’s interesting is that this time slot fits IFA 2026 in Berlin, but the event is taking place in China. Huawei probably won’t be bringing its new tri-fold handset to IFA, though who knows, we may be surprised.
The Huawei Mate XT Ultimate, the company’s first tri-fold phone, was announced in September 2024. Its successor, the Mate XTs Ultimate, followed in September 2025, a year later. It’s only suitable that the third phone also lands in September.
Huawei may change its folding type
We still don’t know if Huawei will make significant changes to its design. One rumor, from a trusted source, suggested that the Huawei Mate XT 2 could fold like the Galaxy Z TriFold, thus abandoning its original philosophy, for better or worse.
Another rumor said that the phone will utilize the Kirin 9050 Pro chip from Huawei and arrive with an upgraded hinge mechanism. A 6,000mAh+ battery was also rumored, and the same goes for stylus support.
