The last time Apple updated the non-Pro versions of the AirPods was two years ago. If you skipped that model and have been waiting for a newer version, you won’t have to wait much longer. According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple plans to launch the AirPods 5 next month.
Apple to launch AirPods 5 in September
According to Gurman’s report, Apple plans to launch its new AirPods 5 in September. The timing also makes sense. September is when Apple usually launches its new iPhones. The event also covers more than just iPhones, it includes wearables like the Apple Watch and sometimes updates to Apple’s audio lineup.
That being said, we don’t know what’s changing from the AirPods 4 to the AirPods 5. It is expected that Apple will launch two versions. There will be a cheaper version without active noise cancellation, and a more expensive version with active noise cancellation. We’re also not sure if Apple plans to increase the price of its AirPods over the previous generation. So we’ll just have to wait and see.
No cameras just yet
It’s worth noting that the September launch are for the regular AirPods. As some of you might have heard, Apple is working on a pair of AirPods with a built-in camera. In fact, a video discovered in the latest macOS update hinted at what we might be able to expect. It also suggested that it could be coming soon.
Unfortunately, it won’t be coming that soon. The video seemed to suggest that Apple was gearing up to launch it. But according to the latest reports, those AirPods are still on track for a 2027 launch. One of its selling points are the built-in cameras, but it won’t be used in the same way Meta uses cameras for its Ray-Ban smart glasses.
Instead, the reports claim that the cameras are used for Apple’s Visual Intelligence. It’s meant to help users identify things around them, as opposed to secretly capturing photos or videos. In the video demo, it showed how the cameras can be used to help with reminders. It’s definitely one of Apple’s more interesting ideas, but we’ll have to wait until 2027 to find out the extent of its capabilities.
