After months of waiting following a delay, Valve has officially revealed the Steam Machine price, and as expected, it’s a bit higher than some people were probably hoping for. Set at $1,049, the Steam Machine is about $100 more than the 1TB Steam Deck OLED, which was increased in price by $300 from $649 just a little earlier this year.
It’s worth noting that Valve will be offering the $1,049 Steam Machine right away. It will also have bundles available that come with the controller, so if you didn’t buy one of those separately, you can get it with the Steam Machine as one single package. You won’t NEED the Steam Controller to play games. Any wireless controller, and presumably wired ones, should work. However, the Steam Controller is likely to be a superior experience as it was tailored to work with the Steam Machine.
The Steam Machine price goes up to $1,428
If you want the 2TB model of the Steam Machine along with the controller in a bundle, then it’ll cost you $1,428 for the lot. The good news is that Valve packages two face plates with the bundle as well, so you get a little something extra, which is a nice touch. However, Valve has also released CAD files that will let people 3D-print and create their own face plates. If you have the means to do so, you could just make your own and make it completely custom and one-of-a-kind.
Pre-orders appear to be going live on June 25 after 10am Pacific Standard Time. On the official Steam Machine page in the Steam client, you can join a list if you’re interested in getting one of these. Joining the list is possible anytime until June 25 at 10am PST, at which point Valve says joining will be closed and emails will be sent out randomly shortly after that point.
This suggests that pre-orders will go live the same day, and anyone getting an email is likely going to be among those selected to purchase. This will follow Valve’s recently changed hardware requirements, which includes having a Steam account prior to the pre-order/launch dates for the hardware going live. This account will also need to be in good standing, and you’ll be limited to one piece of hardware per account.
