T-Mobile is one of the three largest carriers in the US. In fact, the carrier recently shared its Q1 2026 earnings report, which revealed it’s doing really well. However, it hasn’t stopped analysts from pushing the idea of an MVNO. But according to T-Mobile CEO Srini Gopalan, he has shot the idea of an MVNO down.
T-Mobile CEO says no to Starlink MVNO
For those unfamiliar, some analysts have raised the possibility of T-Mobile and Starlink working together to launch an MVNO. The idea is that it would allow T-Mobile to reach customers in more rural and remote areas. However, the T-Mobile CEO thinks that the MVNO isn’t that great of an idea.
In fact, this would actually be the second time Gopalan’s been asked that question. The first time was during the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom Conference in March. Back then, Gopalan said that the carrier would only get involved with an MVNO if there’s market share to pick up.
Some would argue that these rural and remote customers are market share. In fact, these are the customers who would normally rely on Starlink. But at the same time, the counterargument is that these are customers that wouldn’t have T-Mobile coverage to begin with. If they can solve their connectivity issues with Starlink, there’s no reason for them to sign up for a T-Mobile and Starlink MVNO.
As for customers who already have access to T-Mobile, once again, why would they sign up for this MVNO when they’re already covered? Plus, chances are if they can access T-Mobile, they can probably access AT&T and Verizon, giving them options when it comes to plans and pricing.
T-Mobile’s ongoing partnership with Starlink
That being said, T-Mobile still has an ongoing partnership with Starlink. This comes in the form of SuperBroadband, a 5G fixed wireless access service aimed at businesses. In this case, the partnership makes sense. The goal of this service is to provide 100% operational uptime.
By working with Starlink, it can provide backup connectivity in the event T-Mobile goes down. That’s the kind of partnership and expansion that Gopalan is talking about, gaining new customers that they might not normally have gotten. However, with an MVNO, it feels more like shuffling existing customers around.
