As good as its features and streaming quality are, Spotify is not without its flaws. But the company actively fixes them one at a time. In the latest, the company is reportedly working on a fix for a long-standing problem. Spotify is spotted working on a dedicated “Cache Limit” feature for its Android app.
Spotify app’s Cache Limit feature may let you cap cache storage
As the name suggests, this feature will let users limit the amount of local storage used by temporary files. Spotify currently caches music, podcasts, and album art to make playback smoother and reduce mobile data usage when you replay content. While that’s reasonable, users have little control over how much space this cache takes up.
Unlike offline downloads, which use a separate storage pool, the temporary cache can grow to several gigabytes over time and eat up your phone’s storage. That may not have been a problem a year ago, but with the current RAM crisis and phone prices rising, it can be frustrating.
For what it’s worth, users can clear the cache in Spotify Settings > Data saving & offline > Clear cache to free up some storage. But doing this frequently can get quite annoying. There have been multiple complaints about this for so many years. Well, things might finally change soon.
This will not have an impact on downloaded music
Folks at Android Authority, while digging through Spotify for Android v9.1.88.815, have spotted code that suggests Spotify is finally working on a Cache Limit feature. As the name indicates, this could stop the app from taking up your phone’s storage. The strings suggest there will be a dedicated sub-menu to set a limit for storage used for cached content.
Spotify will reportedly throw a pop-up when setting the limit, explaining how your choice could affect playback and data usage. If the limit is too low, the app will warn, “A small cache may affect playback and increase data usage.” It will also note, “A larger cache means smoother playback and less data usage.” It will also offer a “Spotify recommended” default limit. Either way, when the feature rolls out, Spotify will prompt users to set a limit when they clear their cache.
The strings reportedly mention the cache limit will not impact your downloaded music and podcasts. That said, the Cache Limit feature is not live yet. The company has not announced it yet, but we hope it arrives soon.
