Physical PlayStation game discs will become a thing of the past in 2028. Sony has announced that starting in January 2028, it will stop releasing new PlayStation games on physical discs.
Physical PlayStation discs will become a thing of the past in early 2028
Just to be clear, that does not go for games Sony makes, but for games in general. This change pertains to all games that are coming to PlayStation from January 2028 and onward.
Sony said that following January 2028, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This change will not impact games that have already been released or will be released prior to January 2028 in disc format.
The company says it’s doing this to “adapt to consumer trends as the general preferences for digital media significantly outpace physical discs.” Sony also added that the transition “will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.”
This does not come as a complete shock, though. For years now, Sony has been generating the vast majority of its software sales through digital purchases. At the end of March, Sony confirmed that 85% of PlayStation game sales during the fourth quarter of its last full fiscal year were digital. That’s an overwhelming percentage.
The Android Headlines Take
Physical game discs have been a part of the gaming industry for a long, long time, in various shapes and forms. For those a bit older among you, me included, this will come more as a shock than to others. It brings back memories; that’s for sure.
The hard truth is that the vast majority of gamers buy their games digitally, so Sony decided to pull the trigger on physical discs. Even Rockstar Games will release GTA 6 in digital form only, from what we’re seeing thus far. Things could change after it’s released, but that doesn’t seem as likely.
