The iPhone Ultra will be Apple’s first foldable smartphone. With a rumored price tag of around $2,000, this will be a very premium device, nearly double that of the regular iPhone. But it seems that Apple is confident in the device, so much so that panel shipments for the foldable iPhone are expected to account for 29% of foldable panels shipped in 2026.
Apple expected to account for a lot of foldable iPhone panels
This is according to the latest report from Counterpoint Research, which claims that Apple’s foldable iPhone will account for 29% of panel shipments in 2026. That’s almost a third of all foldable panel shipments, which is staggering given that it is Apple’s first foldable. Samsung is expected to take the lead with 31% panel shipments, followed by Huawei in third place with 24%.
Now the question is, how and why is Apple so confident? Because if the iPhone Ultra flops, that’s a lot of unsold inventory. However, presumably a company as big as Apple has done its research and solicited feedback. Granted, ordering panels worth 29% of the market doesn’t mean that every single one of them sells. But at the same time, Apple is probably working with some data that indicates that it could be close.
Will the iPhone Ultra flop?
That being said, there are plenty of reasons the iPhone Ultra could succeed, even if it’s Apple’s first attempt at a foldable. For starters, Apple has the branding and loyalty. There are undoubtedly some customers who will buy it simply because it’s an iPhone and it’s by Apple. Secondly, Apple’s iPads have been doing pretty well over the years.Â
One main difference the foldable iPhone has over other foldables is that when it is open, it is shaped like an iPad mini. This means that customers who own iPhones and iPads are already familiar with the experience. Customers who have been debating getting an iPad won’t have to decide anymore since the iPhone Ultra kind of solves that problem.
Lastly, Apple has sat quietly on the sidelines watching the competition. It has learned what to do and what not to do. This means that the iPhone Ultra should be the culmination of all that industry watching. Of course, it could still fall flat on its face, but we’ll find out soon enough in the coming months.
