If you feel like your photo editing workflow has been stuck in the past, today is your lucky day. After nearly two years without a significant update on Android, Snapseed 4.0 is finally starting to appear on the Google Play Store. iOS users got a major refresh for the app last year. Now, the wait is finally over for Android fans.
Snapseed 4.0 brings several improvements and new features to the Android app
The jump from the old 2.22 Snapseed version straight to 4.0 is a big deal. For a long time, the Android app lacked the modern tools found on other platforms. This rollout aims to bring both versions to the same level, offering professional-grade tools without paying a cent.
As of today (May 8), the update is officially on the store. Google appears to be using a staged rollout, though. If you don’t see it yet, don’t worry; it should reach your device shortly.
What is new?
The list of features is extensive, but a few standouts change how you will use the app. Perhaps the most anticipated addition is Smart Masking. This tool allows you to isolate a subject or a background with a single tap, making targeted edits much faster than the old manual brush method.
Another huge time-saver is Batch Editing. You can now apply your favorite looks and specific adjustments to multiple photos at once. If you often edit series of photos from the same trip or event, this feature alone makes the update worth it.
Snapseed 4.0 also introduces the Snapseed Camera. Instead of just editing photos you’ve already taken, you can now shoot directly within the app using custom styles or film simulations in real-time. This “live” approach can save you a lot of time in post-processing.
For those who love the classic aesthetic, the update includes realistic film filters and tools like Halation and Bloom, which replicate the soft, glowing highlight effects of vintage lenses.
Still free, still powerful
Despite the improvements, Snapseed is still an app without subscriptions, ads, or watermarks. You still get full RAW support and non-destructive editing, allowing you to undo any changes or revert to the original image whenever you want.
Whether you are a casual snapper or a serious mobile photographer, Snapseed 4.0 is a breath of fresh air for an app that many feared had been forgotten.
