Google Photos is a great tool if you need a place to store backups of your photos or want to make quick and simple edits. But if you’re looking for something a bit more advanced, Google’s Snapseed is a great alternative app. Now, it looks like Google is giving Snapseed more features, like how Snapseed Camera can save originals on Android and adding geotags.
Snapseed updated with new features
In the most recent update to Snapseed Camera on Android, the app can now save originals as well as add geotags to images. For those who like to have location data embedded into their photos, the Snapseed Camera app now supports that. You have to toggle the feature on, though. You can find it in the app’s Camera Settings, where if you’re running the latest update, you should see a “Location Metadata” toggle. According to 9to5Google, it’s turned off by default. You’ll also have to grant permission when you turn it on.
The next update to Snapseed Camera is the ability to save originals on Android. This is actually a bigger deal than some of you might think.
Why Snapseed Camera originals on Android is a big deal
Right now, most of us might take a photo using our phone’s native camera app. Then we launch a photo editing app like Snapseed to make the edits.
Snapseed has a camera baked into the app. However, the problem is that before this, if you applied a filter and took a photo, you do not have the original unedited photo to work with. This means you’d have to take the photo again, which sometimes might not be possible. With this update, users have the option of saving the original so that they can go back to it if they don’t like the edits they made.
Users will also be able to select specific folders. This lets users store their photos in separate folders, one for edited images and one for originals.
It’s not a groundbreaking update, but if Snapseed is your primary image editor, these are quality of life updates worth checking out. The latest version is rolling out as we speak, so you can download it from the Play Store.
