Smart glasses are becoming a widely available piece of consumer technology and that means companies are going to ramp up efforts to try and advance this tech in new and innovative ways, and for xMEMS that means introducing the world to the XMC-1200 chip. The XMC-1200 is a micro cooling chip that was purposefully designed for smart glasses, AR, and XR as a way to help keep them at a more reasonable temperature.
As wearables get smaller and smaller, it becomes more challenging to keep those devices cooled. This new chip from xMEMS aims to solve that problem. This isn’t the company first rodeo, either. It already has experience in creating smaller cooling chips, like the solid-state cooling XMC-2400 it announced back in 2024. But while that solution was designed for smartphones, the company’s new chip aims to tackle cooling for much smaller devices with significantly less space for components.
The xMEMS XMC-1200 will enable sustained performance and improved comfort
The reason xMEMS created this new cooling chip is because the company says that smart glasses are hitting a thermal wall. What it means by this is that smart glass manufacturers are coming up against hurdles with thermal management because of the lack of space for active cooling. This can lead to lower performance, more discomfort for the wearer, and less powerful features.
By integrating a chip like the XMC-1200, glasses makers can enable their smart glasses to “produce longer video recording sessions” and come with “brighter and more stable displays.” This is in addition to the enhanced comfort, as glasses wouldn’t be heating up as much during extended use.
The XMC-1200 chip is incredibly small at just 46mm², which is not microscopic but it’s certainly small enough to just barely cover your fingerprint. xMEMS also states that the chip is capable of reducing temperatures by “up to 10 degrees Celsius at a 1W thermal load.” That’s a significant drop for something you’re wearing on your face. Glasses featuring this tech are still a long way off though. xMEMS expects that smart glasses with its new chip will hit the market in Q4 of 2027.
