
Broadly speaking, cooling servers used in AI data centers is very much like cooling a PC. You have the option of going for air cooling or liquid cooling. The temperature of your surroundings also matters, where a colder room will probably do a better job of cooling your PC than a hotter one. But obviously data centers scale way beyond a single server, which is why Samsung is investing $158 million in its AI data centers to keep them cool.
Samsung spending millions to keep AI data centers cool
Like we said, there are multiple ways of cooling data centers. But in Samsung’s case, the company acquired Germany-based FläktGroup back in 2025 for $1.68 billion. FläktGroup, for those unfamiliar, specializes in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) solutions. Samsung is now leveraging its acquisition by spending $158 million to build a new HVAC production line in Gwangju, South Korea, by 2028. This factory will manufacture FläktGroup cooling systems, including solutions built specifically for AI data centers.
Samsung doesn’t go into detail on how it plans to use HVAC for cooling. However, given that FläktGroup specializes in HVAC, it sounds like it will be a different approach compared to other companies. This includes AI data centers by Microsoft and Google, both of whom utilize water cooling to some extent.
But this doesn’t mean Samsung isn’t interested in hydro-based cooling solutions. Back in June, the South Korean tech company teamed up with Supermicro to test their hardware in marine environments to see how well they hold up over several years. Eventually, this could lead to Samsung launching floating data centers that utilize the ocean as a natural radiator.
The ever-growing power consumption
It’s not surprising that companies are now seeking greener ways to cool data centers. Using AI to generate images and videos is resource-intensive. Connecting it to the power grid and using fresh water supply isn’t sustainable in the long-run. This is why more companies are seeking more natural alternatives.
We’ve already seen how data centers on land have affected regular people. As more data centers connect to the grid, their demand for electricity has also caused prices to spike, affecting people in their homes and local businesses. This is also why Texas has placed a moratorium on new data center approvals.
