Samsung is reportedly working on developing robots that will end up being able to work at its chips manufacturing plants, and is currently staffing a team that will be developing these robots.
According to recent reports from Korean media outlet ‘Korea JoongAng Daily,’ Samsung’s team of people working on these robots were previously part of Samsung’s equipment technology research institute. Some of the team was transitioned to new roles across Samsung’s business but later were brought back to form this team, which is now said to be a permanent team working together on this project.
This new project is separate from Samsung’s past and current work on robots. Back in August it was reported that Samsung had been working on humanoid robots for years. Development has been entirely in-house, and is “quite far along.” It was also reported back in July that Samsung wants to build robots designed for “general purpose” work that have the capability to work anywhere.

According to the report, the robots that are going to be developed will not necessarily do actual fabrication work on chips at these plants. Rather, they’re going to initially be for handling maintenance on equipment within the factory. This kind of work is currently handled by on-site engineers as well as contract workers, and Samsung reportedly wants to shift this sort of task to completely in-house, but also make it automated.
Samsung is also reportedly planning for these robots to travel around the fabs to work a variety of areas in the factory. The long-term plan that’s still unclear is how much of this work will be automated using these new robots.
The reason that Samsung is working on developing these new robots rather than use humanoid ones is that they’re more conductive to rapid automation, the report states.
