Artificial intelligence developers usually make the users choose between performance and price. This has been especially true for Anthropic’s AI coding tools. However, the company is now trying to flip that script with its latest release. Anthropic just announced Claude Opus 5.5 across its official social channels, unveiling a flagship model that delivers top-tier intelligence while making heavy workloads significantly cheaper.
According to internal benchmarks and early rollout data, Opus 5.5 matches the performance of Anthropic’s powerhouse Claude Fable 5.1 on most tasks. Plus, it manages to slash overall operating costs by roughly 40% compared to Opus 5. The release combines lower per-token pricing with higher processing efficiency.
Token price drops and aggressive benchmark gains
The price restructuring is a big deal for developers running massive workloads. Token costs dropped 20% down to $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens. Meanwhile, cache read costs fell by an impressive 60%. Because the model runs over 30% faster and uses fewer tokens overall, subscriber usage limits stretch 25% further, boosting five-hour interaction caps by 20%.
On the technical front, Anthropic didn’t hold back when positioning Opus 5.5 against rival offerings. On coding benchmarks like FrontierCode, the company claims Opus 5.5 beats OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra at approximately 20% of the cost per task.
It also registered an 11-percentage-point gain on Terminal-Bench 4.0 and pulled ahead on CursorBench 4.0, directly answering competitive pressure from both OpenAI and low-cost Chinese models.
Cleaning up “Claudish” prose and tightening safety boundaries
Beyond raw speed and agentic coding gains, the update tackles one of the biggest user complaints regarding earlier iterations. That is, the overly convoluted, formulaic prose often dubbed “Claudish.” Anthropic specifically tuned Opus 5.5 to put critical information upfront, reduce corporate jargon, and adhere closer to user formatting instructions.
Safety systems also received a major overhaul alongside the core architecture. Internal testing revealed that Opus 5.5 performed noticeably better on safety evaluations. More specifically, it showed an 85% reduction in attempts to bypass boundary guardrails compared to Opus 5 or Mythos 5.1.
With Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 scheduled to launch in the coming weeks, Anthropic is setting an aggressive new baseline for its entire ecosystem.
