The memory crisis continues and with it follows increased prices on anything that has to do with memory and storage, an issue that some think could carry beyond 2028, potentially well into 2030, but Acer reportedly does not share this opinion.
Since the memory crisis began, sharp price increases have hit the market for consumers on RAM kits, storage drives, pre-built PCs and gaming PCs, GPUs, CPUs, consoles like the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2, laptops and gaming laptops, smartphones and tablets, and the collection of components that make up a desktop if you’re building your own. With companies like Samsung believing the memory crisis could continue into 2028 and beyond, prices on these products are also expected to remain high.
Acer, however, reportedly believes that the prices won’t remain high for as long as some are expecting.
Acer chairman believes PC prices will peak in 2027, then start to decline in the second half of the year
According to Acer’s chairman Jason Chen, the memory crisis “can’t last until 2030,” and the market will start to see a decline in the prices of PCs and PC components in the second half of 2027. Chen also believes that PC prices will peak in the first half of the year. Chen states that he estimates a 5% to 20% increase on PC prices in the fourth quarter of 2026.
It’s also possible that prices of PC components could end up dropping sooner than what Chen expects. However, he mentions that even if that were to happen, it would still potentially take a few months for prices to work their way through the manufacturing, shipping, and retail segments of the system.
Prices have reportedly dropped on some particular components, like CPUs and GPUs, though not all models, and RAM and storage devices continue to cost a higher price.
