Samsung is reportedly preparing to cut off (of sorts) some older Galaxy phones even if they’re working perfectly fine. The company is tightening the Android requirements for payments in Galaxy Store and Galaxy Themes. With this change, Samsung Checkout will no longer process payments on Galaxy devices running an Android version older than Android 5.0. This will start as early as August 25th, i.e., tomorrow.

What this change basically means is that some Galaxy phone no longer be able to process payments through Samsung’s services. This means it’ll be harder for those using older Galaxy phones to buy apps (including in-app purchases), themes, or other paid content. While this can be frustrating to some, Samsung says this is to offer a safer payment environment.
As said, this change only affects relatively old models running dated below Android 5.0. For context, the OS came out over a decade ago. So it’s not very surprising that Samsung is cutting off support for some services on older models. Users on unsupported devices can still access the services, but any attempt to complete a purchase will result in a software compatibility message instead of a success alert.
Time for upgrade
If you don’t want to miss out on paid content, the company recommends checking for software updates and installing the newest version, if available, to continue accessing the features. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the end of Galaxy Store access on these older models. Instead, Samsung is specifically restricting transactions through its payment system. The devices themselves will also work as usual.
If you’re stuck with a device below Android 5.0, there’s no software workaround, unfortunately. Once the policy takes effect on August 25th, the Samsung checkout process will be blocked. The only logical step at this juncture would be upgrading to a newer model, even if you’re not a big fan of this move.
