For a while now, TSMC has been making Qualcomm’s chipsets for them. However, if the latest rumors are true, it looks like Samsung might be landing some orders for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6.
Samsung could land some Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 orders
According to the reports out of Korea, it appears that both Qualcomm and Samsung are in talks over the production of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset. The report suggests that both companies are in discussion over specifications, process optimization, and pricing for the chipset.
This is actually not the first time Qualcomm and Samsung have worked together. In fact, in the past, Qualcomm did use Samsung’s foundries for its earlier chipsets. However, due to poor yields, Qualcomm turned to TSMC and hasn’t looked back since. At least until now. That being said, it is unclear how big of an order Samsung will get and if TSMC will still get the bulk of Qualcomm’s business.
But it’s not surprising that Qualcomm is looking elsewhere. TSMC is targeting 60,000 wafers per month of 2nm capacity. However, it turns out that Apple might have snapped up most of TSMC’s supply, so Qualcomm will need to seek an alternative manufacturing partner. In this case, it could be Samsung.
Not so quick
However, it’s worth noting that it isn’t a done deal yet. This is because Samsung’s 2nm production yield has reached 55%. TSMC, on the other hand, has reached 60-70%, and Qualcomm requires around 70% minimum for large-scale contract manufacturing. This means that Samsung is still quite behind on that front.
This doesn’t mean Samsung will be excluded entirely. But at those yields, Samsung might not necessarily get the bulk of the orders. But it’s still a good start. TSMC has largely dominated the chip making scene for years, so having alternatives like Samsung and Intel could ease supply and maybe even lower prices.
Either way, we’ll have to wait and see if this deal pans out. In the meantime, Qualcomm is expected to unveil its next-gen flagship chipsets at its Snapdragon Summit next week. We should have more details on the new chipsets then.
