Google’s Safety Signal feature was originally launched with Pixel Watch 2. It offered Google Health Premium users LTE connectivity during Emergency SOS and Safety Check even without a standalone carrier plan or Bluetooth connectivity. Now, Google has announced it will end support for Safety Signal on certain Pixel Watches in December.
Google is ending Safety Signal support on Pixel Watch 2 and 3 in December
The Pixel Safety app offers several life-saving features that work on both Pixel phones and Pixel Watches. Among them is Emergency SOS, which, as the name suggests, helps users quickly contact emergency services. Meanwhile, Fall Detection will alert others if someone wearing the watch takes a hard fall and can’t call for help. However, it needs a connection to work.
These features were available to Fitbit Premium and later Google Health Premium subscribers using the Pixel Watch 2/Watch 3 LTE models even without a Bluetooth or cellular plan. Safety Signal allowed the watch to connect to LTE services during emergencies. It can be very reassuring that the feature would work without a phone or a carrier plan.
Google will notify users via an email notification
Well, come December 12, Google will end support for Safety Signal on both smartwatch models. The company notes that existing Google Health Premium users will receive advance notice via email and push notifications. During the 30-day transition period from the date of the email, Safety Signal will continue to be operational without a standalone carrier plan. But after December 12, this access will end.
That said, core safety features like Emergency SOS, Fall Detection, and Safety Check will continue to work as long as your watch connects to Wi-Fi, pairs with a phone via Bluetooth, or has an active cellular plan. If you relied on these features, this update may definitely hurt you.
