Nintendo has just announced the end of the road for the Nintendo Switch 1 in some markets. The company announced when it will stop selling the Switch 1 consoles in Europe and some other markets.
Nintendo will stop selling the original Switch in quite a few markets in early 2027
That is expected to happen in February 2027, which will be weeks shy of the Switch’s 10th anniversary. Nintendo did confirm, however, that it will continue making the Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED model throughout 2026. They’ll remain available in Europe all year.
When early 2027 comes knocking, Nintendo will no longer sell the devices to retailers or through the Nintendo Store in certain markets. They’ll still remain available in some other markets, however.
Here are the markets in which the sales will stop in February 2027: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.
Why did Nintendo emphasize Europe specifically? Well, because the company needs to comply with new European Union (EU) rules that state that certain devices must make it easy for users to replace the battery.
Nintendo does plan to start selling a version of the Nintendo Switch 2 that complies with the new rules as soon as this fall. Users will be able to replace its battery themselves, easily. It will have a slightly smaller battery capacity, however (5,172mAh vs 5,220mAh).
The Android Headlines Take
Ending the Nintendo Switch 1 sales makes sense for several reasons. The EU’s new rules are a part of the reason, sure, but the rising component costs probably have something to do with it as well.
The original Nintendo Switch has been around for a long time, as have its alternatives, the Switch Lite and Switch OLED model. It’s time for the Nintendo Switch 2 to take over completely. We’re just not sure when the Switch 1 will be discontinued elsewhere. You can expect that to happen soon as well, probably at some point in 2027. We don’t see Nintendo holding on to the original Switch for much longer in general.
