The iPhone 18 Pro is set to be announced in September, and it looks like we are actually getting a smaller Dynamic Island this year. We’ve been hearing about this for months, but now we’re actually seeing it in leaked CADs for the device.
These renders come from X user @earlyappleleaks, who claims that the new CAD “confirms the smaller Dynamic Island of the iPhone 18 Pro”. CAD renders are usually given out to case manufacturers so that they can create their cases for the upcoming device. They’re essentially technical schematics that the phone maker shares. They are usually pretty accurate, but can sometimes omit some important information like SIM card slots, bezel sizes, etc.
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of a smaller Dynamic Island
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard that Apple was working on a smaller Dynamic Island; it even showed up in an iPhone 18 Pro prototype last month. Early dummy units have also shown this. The new Dynamic Island measures in at about 14.98mm wide, which is about 25% smaller than the iPhone 17 Pro. This also lines up with a leaked screen protector a few months back that had suggested a 35% savings.
The reason for the smaller Dynamic Island is actually due to Apple moving the Face ID flood illuminator under the display. The infrared camera would still need the cutout, which is why it’s not disappearing completely. So we aren’t getting that full-screen iPhone just yet.
We’ll know more about this once we get closer to the September 2026 launch. The rumor mill for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max has been all over the place so far. Including saying that the Dynamic Island wasn’t shrinking at all. While this might not sound like a huge deal, it will make the iPhone look quite a bit different.
