Do you like tweaking sound frequencies around to match your personal preferences, but can’t do so because you’ve AirPods? Well, Apple has finally got you covered. At the WWDC 2026 event, Apple announced that AirPods will soon get a custom equalizer (EQ) via a software update. Not to mention, it’s a surprising update for a product lineup that has relied on Apple’s own audio tuning all these years.
Apple’s AirPods to finally get custom equalizer (EQ) to let users tweak audio based on their personal taste
Up until now, AirPods users have largely had to accept Apple’s preferred sound profile. In the past, Apple introduced features like Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness to adjust audio depending on users’ surroundings.
However, those looking to manually tweak core sound frequencies haven’t been able to do so. Want more bass for workouts? Prefer sharper vocals and brighter treble for podcasts? Well, all that will soon be possible for AirPods users with the new custom EQ feature.
You’ll be able to choose from bass, mids, and treble, to personalize audio. The upcoming custom EQ feature for AirPods is available for earbuds from Sony, Samsung, Bose, and others for years now. The new feature could also make AirPods more appealing to users who previously felt the default tuning didn’t match their personal tastes.
The feature will roll out alongside Apple’s major software releases this fall
Apple has confirmed that custom EQ for AirPods will roll out as part of its major software updates scheduled for this fall. That’s exactly when iOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, and the rest of big software updates will land. Speaking of AirPods, let’s not forget that the company recently also expanded major Health features to more regions. In other news, the long-rumored camera-equipped AirPods have reportedly reached the design validation testing stage.
