Managing a teen’s digital life is getting a little less complicated. Meta recently announced a significant update to its parental supervision tools, aiming to give families a clearer picture of how algorithms shape the content young users see every day. Now, Meta is offering tools that allow parents to see the general categories their teens engage with on Instagram.
Meta’s new tools reveal Instagram teen interests to their parents
The core of this update focuses on Instagram’s “Your Algorithm” feature. Since its launch last December, this tool has allowed users to manually pick topics they want to see more—or less—of in their feeds. The feature allows social media users to enjoy a feed focused on photography, sports, music, or whatever they prefer. Now, parents can share in that visibility.
The system won’t reveal specific private posts or every single video a teen watches. However, it provides a “big picture” view of their interests. In the coming months, the platform will even start sending notifications to parents when a teen adds a new interest to their algorithm. This will help guardians stay in the loop as hobbies and trends shift.
A centralized command center
Beyond just Instagram, Meta is making the logistics of parenting online a lot easier. Previously, managing settings across different apps could be a fragmented experience. Now, the company is consolidating parental controls for Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta Horizon. Parents and guardians will be able to access them from a single location: the Family Center.
This change means that instead of jumping between apps, parents can send a single invitation to supervise their teen across the entire Meta ecosystem. This central hub will soon offer even deeper insights rather than just tracking each app individually. This includes a broader look at “aggregated time spent” across all platforms.
Meta keeps adding safety tools
Despite the increased visibility, Meta remembers that these new safety protections are added to existing ones. Teen accounts are already designed to filter out sensitive content, maintaining an experience similar to a PG-13 rating. The company also noted that parental supervision on Instagram has seen a massive surge, with the number of enrolled US teens more than doubling over the past year.
