In the past few months, Meta has been extremely generous towards Threads when it comes to adding new features. Speaking of which, last month, Threads received a live chat feature for real-time conversations during major events, followed by support for DMs on the web version of the app. Now, it seems Meta appears to be supercharging Threads with Grok-like AI replies. The announcement came earlier today via an update on Meta’s Muse Spark announcement blog post from early April.
You can soon invoke @meta.ai on Threads posts and replies
Meta AI is also getting a Threads account with the @meta.ai username. That’s because Meta wants you to mention @meta.ai in Threads posts and replies to get your queries resolved. In an example, Meta suggests Threads users could ask questions like “why are people talking about the World Cup this month?” Once asked, Meta AI will be able to publicly reply. Threads users can further invoke Meta AI in replies to other posts.
From the description, the new Threads feature sounds similar to @grok mentions on X. X also allows users to tag Grok AI using @grok in posts and replies to better understand a post or even fact-check what’s being posted by others. Similar to Threads, Grok AI replies are public by default. Notably, xAI says that it uses all forms of data used to interact with Grok to “train” its in-house AI models. However, we can’t say the same for Meta, at least for the AI model training part with this feature.
As Engadget reports, the “early beta” feature will roll out first to Threads users in a least five countries. The list includes Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina, and Singapore. Apart from this feature, Meta has also announced a bunch of updates for Meta AI in relation to Muse Spark. For those unaware, it is a purpose-built AI model for Meta’s products.
Muse Spark upgrades Meta AI capabilities
Besides testing Grok-style AI replies in Threads, Meta is also expanding its AI features. You can expect faster voice conversations, live camera-based assistance, and new shopping tools powered by Muse Spark. The upgraded Meta AI can now handle natural conversations with interruptions, language switching, and image generation.
Not to forget, it can also serve recommendations from Reels and maps. The social media giant is also bringing AI vision to the Meta AI app. It allows users to point their camera at objects or locations and ask questions in real time. On the shopping side, Meta AI can now search Facebook Marketplace alongside web listings for both used and new products. Moreover, Muse Spark is gradually rolling out across Meta apps and smart glasses, including Ray-Ban Meta glasses and upcoming Oakley Meta devices.
