A couple of months ago, Apple raised the prices of nearly its entire portfolio of products. However, at that time, the iPhones were spared. Unfortunately, it was a temporary reprieve because according to the latest leaks, the iPhone 18 Pro and the rest of the lineup are due for a price hike.
iPhone 18 Pro and older iPhones to get price hike
This is according to a post on X by tipster Yogesh Brar. According to Brar, it seems that Apple is planning to keep things simple by raising the price of the entire lineup by $100. This price hike won’t just affect the iPhone 18 Pro but older models as well. So, if you were thinking of getting an iPhone, you should probably move quickly.
Brar claims that these new prices are expected to come into effect by September 8. So you’ve got a little under a month, or maybe even less. We can’t say we’re too surprised, though. A recent report suggested that Apple’s bill of materials for the iPhone 18 Pro has gone up by about 40% compared to its predecessor. So if you were thinking that Apple was going to absorb all of those costs, think again.
The previous report did suggest Apple would absorb some of it, but either way, customers will still “suffer” the increase in prices.
What’s going on?
In case it wasn’t already obvious, this price hike is due to the ongoing memory shortage. Companies like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have shifted their priorities and production lines to HBM. HBMs are used by booming AI data centers. In turn, regular memory like RAM and NAND have a lower priority, thus lower supply, ultimately resulting in higher prices.
There have been reports that Apple is seeking alternative memory supplies from Chinese companies. However, Apple has reportedly failed to negotiate lower prices, but this might not deter them. An alternative supplier means a more steady stream of components, even if it doesn’t mean lower costs.
Apple is reportedly testing memory made by CXMT, but seeing as the company is blacklisted by the US government, there could be potential political fallout if Apple goes through with it.
