Google is working on a refresh to the UI of its AI-powered search experience. Recent discoveries in the Google app’s beta code reveal some tweaks in the design language of the conversational “Search Live” mode and the main home screen. This update seems to seek a more colorful and dynamic aesthetic, following the same line as the recently leaked UI refresh for Gemini.
Google Search Live to get an animated, colorful UI refresh
The most striking part of the update is a new animation that plays during spoken interactions. When a user speaks to Search Live, a purple-blue hue now presses around the edges of the screen. As the AI responds, a light at the bottom of the display shifts colors in sync with the speech patterns (spotted by Android Authority). It’s a purely aesthetic change that adds no new functionality. However, it makes the interaction feel more responsive to what we say.
Simplifying the home screen
Beyond the conversational animations, Google is also tidying up the main search interface. The buttons located under the search bar are becoming smaller and more uniform. Notably, the “Search Live” button is being rebranded with the simpler label “Talk.”
Perhaps the most interesting change is the removal of the “Nano Banana” branding. In the current version of the app, the image generation tool uses a banana icon. Well, the update replaces this with a stylized “stack of photos” icon and the label “Create.” This makes sense, since not every user would associate a banana icon with generating images. In fact, it’s surprising that the company took so long to implement this change.
Below you can see a comparison of the current version vs. the development version:
These updates do not exist in a vacuum. Just this week, similar leaks showed that Google is also working on a more colorful and dynamic interface for the Gemini chat experience.
These design tweaks are not yet live for the general public. However, presence in the latest beta versions suggests an official rollout is imminent.
