Google Cloud wants its AI assistant to do actual work instead of just summarizing text or answering basic questions. Unveiled by Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian at the Gemini at Work 2026 event, the company is rolling out a universal Gemini agent for corporate accounts that can handle multi-step assignments across different apps with minimal handholding.
Instead of guiding the AI through every single step, users can simply describe a final goal. The agent figures out the necessary steps, connects to background tools, and delivers finished documents, spreadsheets, or summaries directly to your inbox.
Working across Google Workspace, Slack, and Microsoft 365
What makes this agent setup so practical is how easily it moves between competing platforms. Instead of staying locked inside Google Workspace apps like Gmail, Docs, and Drive, the Gemini agent operates across Microsoft 365, Slack, and external business tools like Jira, Salesforce, and ServiceNow.
Since the system runs in the cloud, it remembers project details across desktop, mobile, and web channels. That means you can assign a research task on your computer and check the finished summary on your phone later without repeating background context.
AI teammates with custom email addresses and smart model routing
Google is taking the coworker concept quite far. Businesses can assign persistent AI sub-agents their own corporate identities, complete with custom email addresses ending in @agents.company.com. These agents can only see files and folders that have been shared with them explicitly. The approach protects private company data.
Behind the scenes, the system uses Smart Routing to assign tasks to the best AI model for the job. Depending on project complexity and budget caps set by managers, it routes quick tasks to lightweight models like Gemini Flash or brings in heavy-duty reasoning from models like Argon or Anthropic’s Claude.
Right now, the universal Gemini agent is available in private preview for select Gemini Enterprise subscribers, paving the way for autonomous AI companions in the workplace.
