A Phone Unlock for Googlebooks feature would simplify the unlocking process for users if they have the lock set up in the first place, and it will reportedly become a feature that Google offers down the road. You can already do this with a Pixel phone and a Pixel Watch, and a logical next step for this type of feature would be allowing users to do the same thing between their phones and laptops.
This is also available for Chromebooks and has been for a while. Now it looks like Google is already working on bringing this feature over to its latest iteration of laptops. Evidence has been discovered in the Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 software that points to Google currently developing this unlock method.
The Phone Unlock for Googlebooks setup screens have been discovered
When it comes to the new unlock method for Googlebooks, the setup screens for this new feature have been found within the Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 software. The entire setup process with the screen for each step lays out the process in its entirety. Googlebooks aren’t specifically mentioned, however, one of the screens shows a user holding a laptop that has a Google ‘G’ logo on it.
Other screens show the description of how the feature will work, which state that your phone will be able to unlock the device when it’s within range and unlocked itself. So as with other versions of this, your phone will need to be unlocked when you come close to the laptop. It’s also noted that this method could be less secure than a PIN or password, but this is just Google informing the user so they’re making the choice to use it with full knowledge that it might not be as safe.
Google hasn’t confirmed that this feature is coming to Googlebooks and there is no indication at this time of when it might launch should Google decide to roll it out.
