These days, AI-generated images and videos are all over the internet. From online videos to online ads, every now and then, we see plenty of images that, at first glance, look like AI-generated. If not, at least manipulated using AI. While Google has AI detection tools in place, using them on a regular basis can be tedious. That’s mostly because the manual process involved with it. Worry not, Google is now trying to cut down that hassle. Google Messages is getting a new feature that identifies whether you received an AI-altered image in a Messages chat.
Google Messages might get a feature that shows you exactly how AI altered an image in your chat
Android Authority now reports that Google Messages is testing a feature that can read C2PA content credentials. Per the report, Google Messages beta build version messages.android_20260611_04_RC00 has code references that point to AI image checks in the View Details option in an image’s overflow menu.
Google Messages reportedly does more than indicate whether AI edited an image. The app also provides additional information through the image’s overflow menu. In fact, there are apparently 18 different descriptions as part of the AI image check. You may see descriptions like “media captured with a camera, multiple images were combined,” “edited with non-AI tools,” and more.
Putting it simply, Google is developing this feature in a way that gives you a proper idea of how images in your Messages chat may have been altered using AI. Considering how widespread AI-generated content is on the internet, it’s good to see Google doing its bit to tuck a useful feature directly inside the Messages app.
It’s unclear when the feature will roll out to the masses
As of now, it’s unclear whether and when Google will roll out AI image checks in the Messages app. We hope the feature makes it to the general public. That’s mostly because it will help curb misinformation at the one-to-one conversation level. Speaking of AI, let’s not forget that Google Messages is also rolling out a new “Tap to Draft” feature that offers you the choice to review Smart Reply.
