It seems like the Google Messages app has another issue that Google is now investigating. A bug has appeared, and it splits existing group chats into separate threads with the same participants.
Needless to say, this sounds very annoying. This bug follows the RCS connection bug that surfaced recently. Google is still working with carriers to fully fix that problem, and now a new one has appeared.
Google Messages bug is splitting group chats into separate conversations
Users started reporting the issue on Reddit, and Google confirmed that it’s actively working on solving this. The company asked users to submit feedback through the Messages app with the hashtag #splittingthreads.
This problem doesn’t seem to be brand new. It has been around for months, based on reports. Existing group conversations are suddenly creating new threads with the same participants, but without the message history from the previous conversation.
What’s even worse, this apparently can happen during a single conversation. You can end up with seven or more separate chats involving the same people, believe it or not.
Individual conversations are also splitting for some users
That sounds bad enough on its own. Users on Reddit are also reporting that individual RCS conversations are splitting into multiple threads. Replies from the same contact appear in a new conversation.
If you’re wondering whether deleting a duplicate convo helps, well, no, not really. The next incoming reply will simply bring that second thread back. Messages for Web and Phone Link can seemingly combine the separate conversations, though. Android app continues treating them as different threads.
The reports on Reddit include both Pixel and Samsung phones, and include users who upgraded through Samsung’s Smart Switch. Some users say that issues started appearing without a device change.
Some users noticed that Messages switching between RCS and SMS/MMS caused the issue, or at least the issue started happening around that time. It’s up to Google to figure out what exactly the cause is here.
