Google Maps on Android Auto is essential for navigation, but it seems like the bugs don’t seem to completely go away. Recently, Google fixed a bug that caused color-coded traffic lines to disappear across Android, iOS, and desktop. Well, the same issue is now specifically affecting Android Auto users. This completely disrupts the user experience while driving.Â
Google Maps bug leaves Android Auto users without traffic data
Google Maps typically shows red, green, and yellow lines to indicate the speed of traffic. Green means the traffic is normal, yellow indicates a slowdown, and red means the traffic is heavy and slow-moving/stopped. As you can tell, the nature of the feature makes it quite essential when you want the most efficient way to get around. But this core functionality is now broken for many Android Auto users.
There are multiple reports from users on Reddit and the Android Auto support forum about how Google Maps no longer shows the traffic line data on their car’s screen. Some users are reportedly still seeing the same issue on their phones as well.
Google yet to acknowledge
Some users link the issue to Google Maps’ new Immersive Navigation interface. To recall, the feature started rolling out to Android Auto users last month. It added 3D buildings, clearer flyovers and off-ramps, and more. Switching Google Maps to Overview mode may restore some traffic lines, but only on major roads. However, some users opine that the view zooms out too far to be called a neat replacement for the normal navigation view.
Some users say uninstalling the Google Maps update and then disabling automatic updates has resolved the issue. But that looks more like a temporary fix, and it may not be for everyone. One Reddit user notes that even after updating to Android Auto v17.5, the issue persists with Google Maps v26.33.Â
It’s definitely frustrating, especially for those who actively use the feature. Google hasn’t acknowledged the issue yet. We’re hopeful that the company will push an update sooner rather than later, considering how important the feature is for most users.
