Back in May, Google unveiled Android Halo, which is an upcoming feature that will make AI agents more transparent on Android devices. Now, Google execs are starting to give us more information on this new feature.
In a new video on the Google Developers YouTube channel, Sameer Samat, President of Android, and Logan Kilpatrick, Product Lead for Google AI Studio, talked a bit more about Android Halo. They said that it will have a dedicated spot in the status bar, where AI agents are able to communicate with users while running in the background.
Samat also added that as AI agents become more capable of handling tasks autonomously, they’ll occasionally need to ask follow-up questions, provide progress updates, or present completed results, instead of forcing users to jump back into an AI app. Halo will also give these agents a dedicated place to communicate. This makes it easier to follow along and also see when the agent needs input from you.
Android Halo will also work with an agent of your choice, so it is not limited to just Gemini Intelligence. However, Google has not specified which agents will be available just yet.
Samat also said once again that Android is transitioning from an operating system to an intelligent system. One where users simply communicate what they want and the system handles context and actions.
The Android Headlines Take
Like it or not, AI and AI agents are here to stay. Android Halo isn’t expected to roll out anytime soon, though we could see an early version launch with the Pixel 11 in August. Google is known to save some features from the new version of Android for the QPR1 release, which launches with the new Pixels every year.
This should mean that you’ll spend less time on your phone, and more time being present. Which is something we all struggle with.
