Paying a monthly AI subscription usually guarantees keeping the exact tools you signed up for, but Google is officially changing the rules for its budget plan. Google AI Plus subscribers are about to lose access to Gemini Pro models, leaving users facing a steep price jump just to keep using the advanced AI engine.
Cutting Pro model selection from the budget plan
Based on recent Google support updates and notification emails landing in subscriber inboxes, Google AI Plus members will lose the ability to manually select Pro models inside the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search starting November 13, 2026.
After that cutoff, the entry-level $4.99 monthly plan limits manual choices strictly to Google’s lighter Flash and Flash-Lite engines. While existing Pro conversations remain accessible in chat histories, a lighter engine will automatically take over subsequent replies unless users upgrade to a higher tier.
Quadrupling subscription costs to keep control
Subscribers who want to keep picking Pro models for heavy writing, coding, financial analysis, or deep research will need to jump to the $19.99 monthly Google AI Pro plan or the $99.99 monthly AI Ultra tier. That represents a fourfold price hike, adding at least $15 to your monthly bill.
Upgrading to Pro also doubles the usage allowance from twice the standard free tier limit to four times that capacity. However, many casual users feel forced to pay for extra volume they do not need just to retain a model they already rely on. Meanwhile, Google is reserving its newly announced Gemini 4 Argon engine—which promises enhanced reasoning, specialized workflows across finance and coding, and integrations with over 40 apps—strictly for AI Pro and Ultra members.

Broader free tier tweaks and user backlash
These adjustments follow recent changes to free accounts that rolled out on October 9. That day, Google replaced manual model pickers with an automated default called Gemini Auto. Under this setup, Gemini routes most prompts to Flash-Lite while sending complex queries to Flash or Pro. Free users still retain multimodal inputs, Gemini Live, and reasoning controls ranging from Low to High, but they no longer have manual override power over model selection.
