Spotting text scams before clicking a shady link is becoming one of the most essential skills for smartphone users. Google recently published a fresh reminder that Android owners can use Circle to Search to quickly analyze suspicious text messages and flag potential scams right inside their messaging app.
Drawing a loop around suspicious messages
Google originally introduced this security capability back in May during its summer software announcements. However, the company is highlighting the tool again as text-based phishing attacks continue to surge. The process takes just a few seconds: whenever an unusual message lands in your Google Messages inbox, you simply long-press the home button or gesture navigation bar to activate the Circle to Search overlay, then draw a loop around the text in question.
Once triggered, Google’s AI Overview analyzes the phrasing, sender details, and context within the selected text to look for common scam patterns. The system then displays clear guidance on your screen, pointing out specific red flags like unsolicited business quotes, fake package delivery notices, or high-pressure banking demands, while giving you a direct recommendation on whether to delete the message and block the phone number.
The tool does not just hunt for malicious messages; it also helps confirm when an incoming text is genuine. If you circle an official security alert from your bank, a flight update, or a legitimate delivery notification, the AI Overview reassures you by confirming that the message matches trusted communication formats. This approach saves you from accidentally ignoring important updates.
Broad availability across compatible Android phones
This capability is already live for Android devices that support Circle to Search. It works seamlessly within Google Messages without needing extra setup. As scammers continue refining their tactics with increasingly convincing messages, having an instant AI check right at your fingertips gives Android users a practical line of defense against mobile fraud.
