We know YouTube as a platform for streaming videos. But over the years, YouTube has dabbled in various social features like YouTube Community, which allows creators to reach their subscribers directly. But now, Android Authority has uncovered a potential new social feature on YouTube called “Tamba.”
What is YouTube Tamba?
According to the report, they were digging around version 21.44.534 of the YouTube app for Android and came across branding for “Tamba.” This came in the form of a logo asset and various icons related to it. For instance, there are camera, chat, bookmark, inbox, share, sticker, and heart icons.
There are also references made to Android and iOS, suggesting that Google could be building this feature for both platforms at the same time. However, it’s hard to say what it could be. There are certain strings that suggest it could be some kind of social feature. For instance, there are strings related to “new follower” or “follow request” and more.
Don’t get too excited just yet
Now, before you get too excited at a more social version of YouTube, don’t. As Android Authority notes, there’s a lot of reference to “sandbox” in the name and strings. For those unfamiliar, sandbox is a software term used to indicate that a particular feature is being isolated from the main app.
This is useful during the development phase where developers might want to test out or experiment with features without it necessarily affecting the main software itself. So, as Android Authority speculates, Tamba could be an experiment and nothing more.
Like we said earlier, YouTube already has social features built into it. The company is also expanding in-app private messaging. There are also plans to introduce group chats at a later date. What this means is that Tamba could simply be where YouTube is testing out these features before rolling it out. This is versus Tamba being a completely new app or platform.
Either way, it’s definitely too early to tell. Google and many other companies tend to experiment and try new features. However, they don’t always make the final cut or make it to market. But we’ll keep our eyes peeled should more information surface in the future.
