Bluesky users will soon get shorter, cleaner domain names. The social media platform’s CEO, Toni Schneider, announced that it has applied to make “.bsky” an internet domain suffix. Something like .com or .org. Well, if this goes through, users should be able to turn their long social handles into shorter domain names, like “alice.bsky.”
Bluesky users could soon have domain names of their own
Bluesky has yet to receive approval for its application. The CEO says that ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), a nonprofit that oversees domain names for the internet, will publish the applications for new domains on October 7. Bluesky’s request will be among them. That said, it will take 18-24 months for the process to finish.
Once done, though, it could give Bluesky more room to improve user profiles. It could turn them from simple profile pages with bios and posts to something better. A complete personal home page that establishes a user’s online presence.
No plans to sell or monetize the domains
Bluesky reportedly says there’s no plan for how “.bsky” domains would be requested, registered, or distributed. It, however, made it clear that it has no plans to sell or monetize the domains. That’s significant considering domain registration can be a profitable business and could give Bluesky another source of revenue. For what it’s worth, Bluesky has raised significant funds but isn’t generating ad revenue yet.
Bluesky notes that selling domains would go against its policy of an open web. “Domains are a big part of the open web, as they allow users to control their own online identity,” said Rose Wang, Bluesky’s COO, in a comment shared with TechCrunch. “Bluesky was built on the belief that you should own your presence online, not rent it from a platform that can take it away.”
